The most important thing with that record was the room, it was an old broadcast studio (for the CBC) that wasn't being used by them anymore. That album was mostly using neve 1064 channel strips. It was tricky because I had to set levels by walking all the way into the control room and hoping that I guessed the right amount to turn the knobs. I went in by myself and used my laptop to screen share with the studio computer. The Party was the first record where I actually went to a nice studio to record. Thanks again man, love the new record btw <3 The songwriting is absolutely the most important element and, in case you haven't heard this enough, yours are truly special. Like I said, all the technique has very little to do with your overall impact as an artist.

If there's another interview where you touched on this that I have missed, my apologies. digital, key mics/preamps, what kind of space was used/how it was treated). Just wondering if you could elaborate a bit on how you went about recording that record (for example tape vs. 'The Party' is such an inspirational record for home studio musicians. I'm a believer of 'if it's good music then it will be heard'. if you're interested in songwriting or producing, then that's what you should do. I see a lot of people focussing on marketing themselves and trying to get into the business side of things, but really that's not the point of it. I find it easier to get ideas across when I'm on my own.įor advice I guess I'd just say keep writing songs. I wanted to record my songs so I figured out a way to do it and just stuck with that method. I mean honestly I never really thought about it as producing, it was like. I slowly got different gear and eventually got an mbox that I used for a long time. I had a mic that I would plug straight into my soundcard and recorded that way when I was in high school. But yeah, I started out 'producing' myself. My first album Darker Days I recorded with a friend in a little studio, so that one was different.
